The specialists

Emily, curly-hair specialist at Johan Hair Studio

Emily

Curl Specialist · DevaCurl-trained

Emily can read a head of curls in seconds — pattern, density, porosity, the cowlick that's been fighting every cut you've ever had. That diagnostic eye is where every appointment starts: a real conversation about how your hair behaves, not a quick glance and a guess.

Her philosophy is simple and a little stubborn: the cut should make your mornings easier, never harder. She shapes curl by curl, dry, so she's cutting the hair the way it actually falls — and she'll pull reference photos so you both know you're working toward the same thing before a single snip happens.

Clients come back for the teaching as much as the cut. Emily walks you through the products, the order, and the wash-day routine for your specific curl pattern, so the look you leave with is one you can recreate at home on a regular Tuesday.

Cathy, curly-hair specialist at Johan Hair Studio

Cathy

Curl Specialist · DevaCurl-trained

Cathy is patient, precise, and a true believer that no two curls should be treated the same. She's especially loved by first-timers — the "curly newbies" who've spent years being told their hair was a problem to solve rather than a texture to work with. With her, it's the opposite from the first minute.

Her DevaCurl training shows most in color: dimensional work placed to read beautifully through every coil and wave, never flattened into something that only looks right when the hair is straight. She color-corrects and balayages with the curl pattern in mind the whole way through.

Above all, Cathy listens. She asks what your hair does on its worst day, not just its best, and builds the cut and the at-home plan around real life — so the result holds its shape for months, not just for the drive home.

“They actually listened — and taught me how to style my curls at home. For the first time, my hair makes sense.”

The studio

A room built for curls

Johan Hair Studio sits on Highway 105 in Palmer Lake, Colorado, in the Tri-Lakes area just north of Colorado Springs. It's a small, by-appointment studio on purpose — one client at a time, no rush, no overbooked chaos. That pace is what makes the teaching possible.

Everything here is organized around a single idea: curls first. We don't do curly hair as a side specialty between straight cuts — it's the whole point. The techniques, the products on the shelf, and the way we cut are all chosen for textured hair, which is exactly the hair most salons get wrong.

That focus is also a philosophy. We're not here to talk you out of your texture or into a blowout you'll never repeat. We're here to help you understand what grows out of your own head — your curl type, your wash-day rhythm, the handful of products that genuinely work for you — so your hair looks as good on day five at home as it does the day you leave the chair.

By appointment, Monday through Friday, 9–5. When you're ready, request a time and we'll confirm it with you.
